The 2014 BET Awards Recap
The 2014 BET Awards took place last night (June 30) at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, California. Hosted by Chris Rock, the star-studded event featured performances by Chris Brown, Pharrell, Drake and Nicki Minaj, among others. Beyonce and Pharrell were the show’s big winners, each picking up three awards.
Rock opened the show with a funny monologue, saying, “Tonight, you are going to see Black people getting credit for something they created.” He then went on to poke fun at the Solange/Jay-Z elevator scandal, Rick Ross, Donald Sterling, and other pop culture news.
Lionel Richie received the Lifetime Achievement award, and sat through a special tribute performance of “Hello” by John Legend. The buzz on social media, however, was that BET somehow managed to spell his name wrong in the show’s graphics.
Chris Brown brought out Lil Wayne and Tyga for his hit song “Loyal,” but more people seemed to react to his fashion choice, as he wore a long plaid pajama looking shirt. Though the show promoted a live Jay-Z and Beyonce performance, it was only a pre-recorded show that aired on TV from a stop off their "On The Run" tour.
Other notable moments include a Kevin Hart/Kerry Washington Scandal skit that had everyone talking, and a possible diss towards Iggy Azalea by Nicki Minaj during her acceptance speech for Best Female Hip Hop Artist.
But despite the feel good spirit of the Awards inside the theater, BET couldn't control the violence that took place in and around the Los Angeles area. Unfortunately, there was a stabbing that took place at a pre-Awards event and shots were fired at an unofficial afterparty for the show that took place at LA's Supper Club at 2:30am.
