Billboard Music Awards Recap: MJ's Back, Eminem Is Top Rap Artist
The 2014 Billboard Music Awards took place on Sunday evening at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, and the stars came out to celebrate the music.
The big appearance of the night was the Michael Jackson hologram that sang and danced on stage to “Slave To The Rhythm,” a song from his posthumous album. But there were also notable performances from Jennifer Lopez (who also took home the Icon award) featuring Pitbull, Katy Perry, and Miley Cyrus. Robin Thicke, who also performed, took the opportunity to use his time to try her “Get Her Back,” a song dedicated to estranged wife Paula Patton.
Justin Timberlake racked up the most awards, taking home seven, including the awards for Top Male Artist and Top Billboard 200 Artist. Although he was not in attendance, a taped acceptance speech provided one of the night’s most comical moments. “It’s not a competition, but if it was, I won,” he said.
Eminem won the Top Rap Artist award, beating out Drake, Jay-Z, Pitbull, and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. His Marshall Mathers LP 2 also picked up the award for Best Rap Album. But Macklemore & Ryan Lewis won in the Top Rap Song category for “Can’t Hold Us.”
