Black Music Month: Celebrating Jay-Z
This week, JimmyJazz.com salutes Jay-Z for Black Music Month. Recognized as one of the most successful rap artists in the music industry today, Jay-Z’s business acumen has proven to be the key factor in his power player status.
After 20 plus-years in the game, the Brooklyn-bred rapper has built an empire that includes his multi-platinum recordings, his Rocawear clothing line, his RocNation management company, and of course his marriage to Beyonce Knowles-Carter. In 2012, Forbes estimated Jay-Z’s networth at over $500 million.
After being rejected by various major labels early in his career, he launched his own Roc-A-Fella records, along with partners Dame Dash and Kareem “Biggs” Burke, and debuted with the independently released and critically acclaimed Reasonable Doubt album. Soon after, Roc-A-Fella inked a deal with Def Jam, and the rest was history. Jay-Z has released 12 solo albums, and 5 collaboration albums, maintaining his status as one of Hip-Hop’s most respected MCs.
Where style is concerned, he’s been known to dictate Hip-Hop culture’s look, whether it’s a simply stated, yet upscale street-inspired look of fitted cap, t-shirts and crisp pair of jeans, or a button-up shirt. On occasion, he gets his grown man on very well with a dapper suit and tie look.
