Cedella Marley creating Jamaican Olympics garb
Members of the 2012 Jamaican summer Olympics team may have the most fashionable uniforms in London. BET reports Puma has asked Cedella Marley, daughter of the late Bob Marley, to design the athlete's uniforms for the upcoming summer games, and she was more than happy to oblige.
According to the news outlet, the ensembles truly represent the feel of the Caribbean island as well as parts of her father's legacy. The collection consists of military-inspired jackets as well as track suits made of bold hues of gold, black and green to represent the nation's flag. The jackets all also have a patch of Bob Marley's face on the sleeve and Marley's song title "Positive Vibration" embroidered on the inside of the collar of the shirts.
"We took the fit of what my dad would wear and updated it to 2012," Marley told the news source. "You have the Iron Lion military jacket, the Buffalo Soldier shirt. I tried to incorporate the Bob Marley fit in as many pieces as possible where we were able to accommodate that."
Marley spoke with UK Vogue Magazine about how fun and challenging making clothing for the athletes has been.
"I really want the clothes to be able to show off every muscle," Marley told the fashion magazine. "The athletes will be doing their job and mine is to make them look good when they win. I'll be experimenting with prints and color too - all with a Jamaican feel. I'll spend a lot of time ensuring everything is technically sound too, as well as looking great."
Olympic hopeful Usain Bolt, a Jamaican track and field star, released a statement saying there is no one better to create the Jamaican outfits for the summer games than a person so deeply rooted in what Jamaica stands for.
"I can't think of a better person to design our Olympic outfits than Cedella," Bolt said in the statement on PUMA.com. "PUMA got that right…hooking up with a legendary Jamaican. She's a great designer but also carries on the spirit of our nation through the legacy of the Marley family. It's going to be inspirational to run in London with that energy surrounding me."
Fans who want to show their support for Jamaica may want to purchase hip hop clothes including a military inspired jacket like the Akademiks Officer Woven Shirt.
