Gabby Douglas earns more praise

Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas captivated the hearts of millions during her heartfelt performances at the 2012 Summer Olympics. Since then, she has been motivating fans young and old due to her strength, perseverance and ability to overcome various obstacles. BET reports the triumphant gymnast was recently honored for her skills both on and off the gymnastics floor.

Douglas has been named the Sportswoman of the Year by the Women's Sports Foundation. This prestigious award is given to one individual athlete and team sport athlete whose "performances over a 12-month time span have been exceptional," according to the Women's Sport Foundation's official website.

The pint-size gymnast certainly proved her worth in 2012 as she received the all-around gold medal at the summer games and helped her teammates take the gold as a team for the first time since 1996, BET reports. Since her sudden rise to fame, Douglas has continued to prove her worth, appearing on various shows, in magazines, on cereal boxes and at award shows, always sharing her inspirational story.

The Grio recently interviewed the young star and she admitted her motivation stems from a desire to "inspire young girls and everyone."

"I think that when you have a dream, you won't let anyone stop you," she told the news outlet. "So you just want to love what you do and have fun, because it's your passion, so you just want to go out there, have fun and love it."

With her new title, Douglas joins the rankings of other powerful and positive female athletes including Michelle Kwan, Courtney Kupets and Jenny Thompson in the individuals category. Previous team sport winners include Misty May-Treanor, Kerri Walsh and Serena and Venus Williams.

Do you think Douglas deserves this title? Has her story empowered you?
