Jay Z pledges donation to new art institute
If you've seen the music video for Jay Z's "Picasso Baby," you've already witnessed the power of Marina Abramovic's presence. The Yugoslavian artist, who dances with Jay in the mini-film, performed in 2010 at the Museum of Modern Art and her show, "The Artist is Present," struck an inspirational chord with the rapper.
So it makes sense that Jay would pledge to donate to her new space, which is slated to open in 2013. According to Hot New Hip Hop, she is making major renovations to a rundown theater at 620 Columbia Street in New York City and turning it into the Marina Abramovic Institute.
GalleristNY reported that after sitting down with Jay at her office the day before the shoot, the rapper pledged to contribute, but a specific amount hasn't been decided. Regardless, Jeanne Greenberg Rohatyn, who is known as Jay Z's art consultant, noted that Hov has followed Abramovic's work for some time now. He doesn't just plan to write a one time check, either - Abramovic LLC Director Giuliano Argenziano revealed that he's prepared to provide continuing support.
