Mike Tyson takes a bite out of Broadway
When most people think about Mike Tyson, acting is not usually the first thing that comes to mind. However, it was recently announced that acting will be next on the heavyweight champion's agenda. BET reports Tyson is gearing up to star in an autobiographical one-man show on Broadway called "Mike Tyson: Undisputed Truth."
According to the news outlet, the show will run for six nights at the Longacre Theater from July 31 through August 5. Although Tyson might not be classically trained, he's still in good hands, as the production is being directed by the legendary Spike Lee. Tyson opened up about working with the filmmaker on the project, discussing how it just seemed right with Lee, as both were born and raised in Brooklyn and New York is such a big part of both of their lives.
"It is an honor to work with Spike Lee," Tyson told the news source. "I have always admired his work. Sharing the highlights and lowlights of my life with New York is especially important to me as I was born and raised in Brooklyn. I am thrilled to bring the story of the Undisputed Truth to Broadway. Brooklyn to Broadway."
Tyson has already tested the waters with his one man show in a week-long stint at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. This production was co-written by Tyson's wife KiKi and had snapshots and videos of Tyson's early life, career and more playing on the screen behind him.
During a press conference announcing the upcoming show, Tyson gave in an inside glimpse into what the new show will be about and admitted some parts will be hard to say out loud, but he's ready for his story to be told.
"I have to be careful because I can't stay on some subjects for a long time," Tyson said during the press conference, according to ABC News. "I can't stay … for a long time because I might cry, something might happen."
Tyson added he and his wife discussed airing out all of his dirty laundry and the couple decided now was the right time to do so. Tyson is finally clean and on the right track after years of drug abuse and "being a pig and stuff." The pair feels the show is a way to let go of the past and keep moving into the future.
