Nas gets honor named after him at Harvard
Nas is certainly educated when it comes to the streets, but he was recently honored with his own award from one of the most prestigious school's in the nation - Harvard. The school is naming a scholarship after the New York City born and bred MC, real name Nasir Jones. The Nasir Jones Hip Hop Fellowship will allow talented youth to gain acceptance to Harvard's Hip Hop Archive and its W.E.B. DuBois Institute.
Macyliena Morgan, a professor at the school and the founder of the Hip Hop Archives, said in a statement that the goal of the fellowship is to "use academia as a tool to unlock ideas aimed at enriching hip hop traditions while respecting the culture's foundation of critical insight."
Nas shared his happiness over the huge honor in a statement.
"In my rollercoaster of a life I've endured good and bad for sure, and I've truly been blessed to have achieved so much thru art in my short life thus far," the schooled MC said. "I am immensely over-the-top excited about the Nasir Jones HIP HOP Fellowship at Harvard. From Queens, N.Y., to true cultural academia. My hopes are that greed for knowledge, art, self-determination and expression go a long way."
Are you surprised by the recognition or do you think Nas deserves the honor?
