Nephew Tommy talks Essence Music Festival

Thomas Miles, better known as Nephew Tommy to those who listen to Steve Harvey's morning radio show, is more than just Harvey's sidekick. BET reports the entertainer, who played a small role in the smash hit "Think Like A Man," also recently hosted the 2012 Essence Music Festival for the third consecutive time.

According to the source, the three-day event held in New Orleans each year hosted a wide array of A-list performers including Mary J. Blige, Keyshia Cole and Aretha Franklin. Troubled, yet talented musician D'Angelo also performed as a part of his comeback.

Miles recently spoke with BET about the festival and who he was most excited to see.

"I'm an Anthony Hamilton fan, but if I had to be up there performing it might have to be with Charlie Wilson. He’s incredible - singing and dancing with people that are way younger than him. This guy has been reinvented, revamped and he’s still got it going on," Miles told the publication. "He's still rocking. If you haven’t seen a Charlie Wilson show, trust me you don’t want to miss it. And if you are an artist the main thing you need to do is go on before him, you don’t want to go on after him. It ain’t good for you."

The stylish performer, who mixes high fashion duds with hip hop clothes, was also pumped up to see the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin hit the stage, as well as Trey Songz, as he killed it during last year's event.

"I've been hosting for three years now and usually I always feel sorry for the first act because they're almost always performing to an empty house because people haven't come in yet," Miles told the news outlet. "But the night Trey Songz performed? Oh my God. They were loaded in there and he was first. And I was like, 'This young cat has arrived.' They respect him a whole lot and he was doing his thing. This year was no exception. The new school is in there and they ain't playing."

Essence.com reports the festival was held July 5 through the 8th and went off without a hitch.

Fans of Nephew Tommy who want to dress like him can do so by rocking the Rocawear SS Conference Shirt this summer.
