Nike fires Lance Armstrong
Nike is world renowned as a sports brand that prides itself on helping the top athletes in the world perform better through innovations and client input. Because the brand adheres strongly to this set of values, Nike recently had to let go of a long partnership.
Hypebeast.com reports Nike announced that it would be ending its longstanding contract with cycling superstar Lance Armstrong. The company stood by Armstrong as he fought countless doping allegations, but new evidence led Nike to cut all ties with the now discredited seven time Tour de France world champion.
USA Today reports Nike has fired Armstrong and will be taking his name off of the Lance Armstrong Fitness Center at its worldwide headquarters.
"Due to the seemingly insurmountable evidence that Lance Armstrong participated in doping and misled Nike for more than a decade, it is with great sadness that we have terminated our contract with him," Nike said in a statement. "Nike does not condone the use of illegal performance enhancing drugs in any manner."
The news comes on the heels of the announcement that Armstrong will no longer be in charge of the Livestrong foundation he helped build. The foundation's vice chairman Jeff Garvey will replace Armstrong.
