Solange Knowles and Viola Davis spark trend in sporting natural hair
Ladies going au naturale, rocking Afros and short hairstyles has become all the rage with celebrities like Solange Knowles and Viola Davis showing off what their mamas gave them. Not only has "being yourself" gone mainstream, but it's also gone high fashion as Vogue Italia recently featured a spread with African American models representing bold colors and natural hairstyles, BET reports.
Vogue Italia writer Marjon Carlos reports the popularity of stars embracing their natural curls may make everyday women and men feel comfortable rocking the style in their own lives.
“It is uplifting to see the newest pack of Black models storming the catwalks in full embrace of their natural hairstyles, from cropped Afros, flat tops, to buzzed scalps - and in turn being embraced by the industry that has typically approached Black hair with skepticism and harsh critique,” Marjon writes in the article.
According to InStyle Magazine, Davis stopped wearing wigs to big events after encouragement from her husband, actor Julian Tennon.
"My husband wanted me to take the wig off," Davis told the fashion magazine. "He said, 'If you want to wear it for your career, that's fine, but in your life wear your hair. Step into who you are!' It's a powerful statement."
Ladies and gentlemen who want to start being real with their hairdos can enhance the look in the seasons hottest urban clothes. In the issue of Vogue Italia, models are rocking some of the top trends like tangerine orange tops and bottoms, vibrant prints and bold accessories.
