Tags: 106 & Park / BET / Dondria / Phatfffat

By Souleo. For the past five days Dondria has revealed a new side of herself through answering numerous personal questions, schooled us with love notes, talked back to the commenters, demonstrated how she has evolved into a confident and mature young woman, selected some key fashion looks and now she is ready to pass the torch. Well, not exactly since the torch just got handed over to her but she is closing out by shining the light on some fellow rising talent.

After getting her start as a YouTube sensation it's only appropriate that Dondria returns to her breeding ground to highlight the future YouTube musical stars of tomorrow. Check out her picks below to see who Dondria believes will carry on in her web footprints.

deanna040384

She was the first video I ever saw on YouTube before I posted any of my videos. She made me want to sing on YouTube. I fell in love with her voice because she has so much passion and soul when she sings. I know that she tried out for "American Idol," and was on "Sunday's Best." I think she will probably go the gospel route but her voice is beautiful.

Hottlikebroadway

Clearly I love his voice and I've been singing with him since the 6th grade. He has more videos than I have. He can sing and has personality to go with it. I know that he is next. He came to Atlanta and had meetings with Ne-Yo's Compound Entertainment and T.I's Grand Hustle. So we will see what is going on but there are definitely people interested in him.

binawarren

She has a beautiful voice and sings so effortlessly. She has been on "The Apollo," and other shows. I know that she is going to do something and be successful at it.

Editor's Note: A special thanks to Dondria, 135th St. Agency and Dondria's numerous supporters (including @ray_dfw4dondria and @DreamBig31) for making the "takeover" launch a huge success!

Dondria’s Fall Fashion Picks

By Souleo. After tracing Dondria's stylEvolution, she is back on the final day of her "takeover" with her top urban clothing fall looks.  As you will see Dondria likes to keep it nice and simple with selections that have versatility and can easily go from casual to super stylish.  Check it all out below to get the "Dondria" look for this season.

Luxirie by LRG Polin Romper

Rompers are in now and you can take one and do it up with accessories, shoes and a belt.  I would wear it with knee high or thigh high boots and a cute scarf for the fall.

My Favorite Vest by Mystique Apparel

I love jackets and vests because it makes the whole outfit that much more exclusive.  I would wear nothing underneath it or put it over a white tank top.

Essentials Tank Top by Poof Women

I think everybody male and female needs a basic tank top.  You can keep the look basic with sneakers or dress it up with shoes.  You can also put a jacket over it or wear it plain.  There is just so much you can do with a simple basic tank top.

stylEvolution: Dondria

By Souleo. Dondria has come a long way and not only is her journey documented by her musical rise through YouTube but it's also reflected in her style. In day 4 of Dondria's "takeover" she traces her growth from her happy childhood to her naïveté about the music industry to her development of her own style that reflects her newfound mature personal and professional outlook. Read on to see how Dondria has developed into a woman who doesn't feel the need to "dress like Rihanna" to feel confident and beautiful.

I wanted to be colorful at that age 'cause I had a happy childhood. I loved lots of pink and turquoise and now those are my favorite colors. Bright colors and brightness conveys an attitude to people and I was definitely a people person back then.

I wouldn't go to an event like that now. I don't think fashion mattered to me here. I just wanted to be comfortable. I don't think I really cared since to me it was all about the vocals. I wasn't interested in the other stuff that comes with being an artist.

In the journey between my last period and this I have learned that your look always has to be unforgettable. You want them to look at your outfit and say I love that. So I developed a passion for fashion. I look like somebody who does something. I also want to convey that you don't have to be half-naked to make a statement. There are ways to be fashionable and still classy. I don't have to dress like Rihanna. I love the way she dresses but I don't have to dress exactly like her to make my own statement. I can create who Dondria is and still be a fashion icon in the future and be taken seriously.

Dondria Talks Back

August 25, 2010 / Posted in Interviews / Music
Tags: 106 & Park / BET / Dondria / Phatfffat

By Souleo. On day 3 of Dondria's "takeover" we sifted through the thousands upon thousands of comments Dondria has received across various sites and she took the time to talkback directly to each commenter.  Read on as Dondria reveals the reason behind her YouTube channel suspension, addresses rumors of dating Corey aka Broadway, defends her music and more.

Comment by kjbretto3214 from YouTube:

@AnthonyNews JD said on twitter youtube suspended it because she had HER music videos up there...they are working on it now to get her back on...hopefully all her videos where not deleted but im afraid they probably were.

Post by

Dondria's Response:

It wasn't suspended because I had my videos up there but because I posted things from when I was on TV.  You sign a release form saying for example, BET has exclusive rights and you can't post that footage.  So when I was on "The Monique Show" and "106 & Park" and had all that on my channel they suspended my page.  [Editor's Note:  Dondria's Channel is live again: http://www.youtube.com/user/phatfffat]

Comment by Newtonkids123 from YouTube:

Danqq . Itsx Like Yestdayy She Wasx Juhsx Somee Random Girl On Youtube Withh a Amazinqq Voicee . Noww She Famous && Ishh . Wow ! But Do'nt She Go Withh Corey aka Broadwayy ?'

Dondria's Response:

Definitely not.  He is my friend since the 6th grade and we just sing together.  [Editor's Note:  Check here to get the scoop on Dondria's real love interest]

Comment by PLAINSIGHT from concreteloop.com:

Her singing voice sounds like Beyonce's and Kelly's when they were younger. Is she even old enough to be singing about making love? I knew it wasn't before long when they would start having her sing about sex. That's a teeny bopper album cover targeting teens but she's up here singing about "making love".

Dondria's Response:

First of all I am 23 and grown.  People are saying the cover is teeny bopper but they don't know my story.  It shows my transition from 19 years old on Youtube to now when I have my deal and putting an album out.  So I say do the research 'cause you don't know what you're talking about.  I think people find anything to complain about.  The thing about me being signed off of YouTube is that I appeal to everybody.  I did the 2010 Jackson Music Awards in Mississippi and the whole audience was 30 and up.  They loved that song and so do people my age in their 20's.  I am not just made for a teenage audience and if it's that serious parents can control what they want their children to listen to.

Comment by manny from theybf.com:

is that Brandon Hines as her love interest?

Dondria's Response:

Yes, it sure is Brandon in the video "You're the One."

Comment by bubblibrunnette1 from YouTube:

Dondria's Response:

Thank you for sticking with me since 2006.  I'm in debt to all my supporters and they helped me get my record deal.  I do want to be considered a role model.  I want to let young adults know that it is possible and to show that it's okay to be real.  Real will always be appreciated and respected.

Dondria: Notes from a Young Lover

August 24, 2010 / Posted in Interviews / Music
Tags: 106 & Park / BET / Dondria / Phatfffat

By Souleo. Yesterday she answered The Questions and now Dondria's "takeover" continues with the topic of love. You never forget your high school sweetheart.  For many it's their first real experience with the complexities of love including the joyous highs, emotional lows and peaceful middle ground.  Recording artist Dondria has experienced all such levels of love which allows her to sing so effortlessly about it on her debut album, Dondria vs. Phatfffat.  For Dondria the emotional low of young love came when she discovered she had been cheated on.

"I thought that I had the perfect relationship in high school with my sweetheart.  We did all of that talk about getting married and he cheated.  Being cheated on made me cry but instead of breaking up with him I cheated on him.  It was a mess.  I was dumb and in love," she reflected.

Dondria has learned from that "mess" and matured as a woman who has found new love.  This time around she understands the hard work that it takes to make a real relationship last.

"My boyfriend, Derek and I have been together 3 years.  He is somebody that I am pretty confident that later on will be the one that I marry.  We have our names tattooed on each other's wrists.  Being that we are long distance helped me mature as a girlfriend.  It has showed me that it is hard work.  It won't be effortless and you can't be lazy."

Still Dondria is growing and admits that one thing she must get over is being spoiled.

"I know that with Derek I am spoiled.  So sometimes he's like look you got to do some work too.  So I have my little things that annoy him.  So we both must give 100% in everything."

Read below for Dondria's notes from a young lover on how you can keep a healthy relationship.

Keep it true!

Stay loyal and true to your word.  If you only want to date for the time being or be more serious just stay true because the trust and communication are the most important things.  When you know the person is loyal and devoted to you it makes love much sweeter.

Talk to me!

Always communicate because even if you're afraid what you might say will hurt their feelings be honest and communicate.  They will appreciate that more than you lying and them finding out later.

Do something!

Me and my man have a long distance relationship but we read books together and do things that stimulate our minds together.  So learn a language together or go travel somewhere and learn about the country together.

The Questions: Dondria

August 23, 2010 / Posted in Interviews / Music
Tags: 106 & Park / BET / Dondria / Phatfffat

By Souleo. There is a powerful voice emitting from a petite frame that has already taken over YouTube, is now taking over radio and concert halls nationwide and has come to takeover the JimmyJazz.com site. That voice belongs to So So Def/YouTube sensation, Dondria. After being discovered on YouTube by super producer, Jermaine Dupri Dondria has been buzzing with her hit single "You're the One," and opening slot on the Passion, Pain & Pleasure Tour headlined by Trey Songz and Monica.

All this week on the lifestyle section of JimmyJazz.com Dondria will "takeover" with exclusive content every day of the week. Dondria is granting her fans all-access on topics including her personal style, evolution as a woman, love tips gleaned from her own experience, her top picks for YouTube's next big star and much more.

To initiate her "takeover" Dondria sat down for the fun and revealing interrogation series we like to call The Questions. Read on to get your first look into the mind of this rising artist as she talks what she will always try to keep private in life, the last time she cried, the one thing that makes her stop eating and much more. Be sure to visit us every day of this week as Dondria expounds on many of these topics with fresh content.

My experience with fame thus far has taught me to...be grateful and never forget where you come from.

The one thing that has given me tough skin in life is...the hate that comes with the love.

The most important thing I learned from school is...to not care what anybody thinks. It's cool to be you.

The best advice I ever received was...Don't stop and take advantage of every opportunity.

One thing about love I wish I knew earlier is...what loyalty really means.

The person whose opinion matters the most to me is...my boyfriend.

I'll never forget my first...video on BET's "106 & Park."

Even though I share a lot on YouTube and twitter I always keep private...any negativity and drama. Some people use that as promo and put the drama on TV or the internet but I keep that away.

When I'm afraid I...pray.

The last time I cried was...last month. I make myself cry to make people feel bad.

The one thing that always makes me smile is...being on stage.

I eat a lot except for when I am ...stressed.

If I had to choose one word to describe myself it would be...happy.

The Questions: Malik Yoba

June 8, 2010 / Posted in Interviews / Movies / Style / TV
Tags: BET / Malik Yoba / New York Undercover / Shop Talk / Tom Ford / Tyler Perry / Why Did I Get Married Too? / Why Did I Get Married?

By Souleo. Rarely is an actor gifted with as many talents and facets as Malik YobaMalik has proven to be one of Hollywood's best actors from his classic role on the hit TV show "New York Undercover" to his leading role in the Tyler Perry films, "Why Did I Get Married?" and "Why Did I Get Married Too?"  But the accomplishments don't end there.  Malik is a veteran producer, writer and all-around entrepreneur with a diverse portfolio of work.

One of his crowning achievements is the highly successful BET web series, "Shop Talk."  Malik stars, writes, co-directs and produces the series which focuses on life lessons and provocative topics with a colorful crew of outspoken new cats, young guys, and business-savvy young ladies.  Although scripted, the characters pull from each actor's lifelong experiences, often going off-script for candid and inspired real talk.

JimmyJazz.com recently got Malik off script as he talked why "swagger" is overrated, his joy in representing the urban community, menstrual cramps (uhm, yeah) and more.

Stop the hype: Use of the word swagger.

I wish I could: Live to see my children be senior citizens.

Currently crazy about: All the wonderful opportunities I'm receiving after over a decade of working hard to convince corporate America of my relevance and the opportunities in our community.

Favorite brand or designer: I'm all over Tom Ford's Black Orchid cologne.

I dance in my underwear to: "The Naked Song."

Five years from now: I'll be five years wiser.

If I were the opposite sex: I would find a cure for menstrual cramps.

The one that makes me a good lover: Compassion.

When I'm alone in bed at night: I do things I should only do alone in bed at night.

Celebrities Bowl for Peace

January 22, 2010 / Posted in
Tags: BET / Bowling / Russell Simmons

By Souleo. In bowling you can get a gutter ball, a spare or strike out.  On Tuesday night some of the industry's notables came down to Harlem Lanes to strike out violence as part of New York City's Peaceweek, a week long awareness event inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s message of non-violence.  The event was produced by I Love My LIFE Village & Man Up! Inc. and those in attendance included Russell Simmons, Hot 97 radio personality Angie Martinez, Cheryl "Salt" James, Ja Rule, BET's Rocsi of "106 & Park," Alesha Renee and more.

Bowling

It was a night of fun, food and drinks as well as serious conversations about how to promote non-violence.  Alesha noted that there is a serious need to strengthen communication to ensure more peace.

"I think communication has to be better.  In the community there are different cultures, ages, sexism and racism.  There are so many isms so we need to come together and intelligently express issues, needs and wants.  If we do this we can break down barriers," she said.

For Rocsi it all starts with listening and understanding that we are all human and connected to each other.

"People don't listen to each other and they need to heed the word.  We need to realize that we are only killing ourselves in the long run.  We all have so much to look forward to in this life so we really need to listen," she said.

Ja Rule who is finishing his new album and several film projects believes that the generation gap is partly to blame for the lack of peace.

"It's crazy but we got to find a way to create some bridge between old and young folks to share ideas and perspectives to keep the peace thing moving," he said.

Ja Rule also believes that it's going to take a lot more than just the urban entertainment industry to make a true lasting difference.

"I think we do our part but everybody has to do their part.  It's not for one group to do it.  It won't happen overnight so we need to take baby steps and make it fly," he said.

Monica Defines 'Still Standing'

November 17, 2009 / Posted in Music / TV
Tags: BET / Monica

monica-large

Monica's reality TV series on BET, Still Standing, has been buzzing since it recently aired. The title of the show is also the name of Monica's 6th album release and single, which is slated for a early 2010 release.

In a recent cover story with Rolling Out Magazine, here's how the Atlanta-born Monica interpreted 'Still Standing':

"Still standing [are] words that, once you put them together, you think strength. Whatever the rest of the interpretation is, you think ‘still standing' as in not giving up, not turning back, not letting go ... that's how I feel in my everyday life. ‘Still Standing' is the title of the show, but it's also the name of the album, because it's the best representation of where I am right now. That may change in a couple of years. I hope that I'm still standing," she says as an involuntary chuckle escapes her. "But how I look at things may change. It just best describes me right now." - Monica, via Rolling Out Magazine (November 2009)

Major props to Monica, who first hit the scene in 1995 with her triple-platinum debut, Miss Thang. Check out the full interview here!
