Ken Griffey Jr. is arguably the coolest baseball player to ever touch the diamond, and his signature sneakers with Nike reflect that, especially the Air Griffey Max 1. Initially released in 1996, the head-turning turf trainer captivated the footwear world with its audacious look and next-level marketing campaign. It didn’t hurt that “The Kid” wore a cleated version of the sneaker on the field, either.
The fan-favorite model has been rereleased numerous times since its initial debut, and is gearing up for another retro later this month in the coveted, Seattle Mariners–inspired “Freshwater” colorway.
The Air Griffey Max 1 “Freshwater” features a smooth, white-leather base, with contrasting, black-nubuck overlays on the mudguards, side panels, heels, and forefoot Swoosh logos. The black ghillie-lacing system is bolstered by iconic ankle straps, which feature tonal Nike lettering and “24” embellishments. Splashes of the titular “Freshwater” wet the pull tabs and outline the heel’s Swoosh embroidery.
Midsoles are done in bright-white foam with stark-black accents, and boast visible Air units in the forefoot and heels. The model is complete with black rubber outsoles. The Nike Air Griffey Max 1 “Freshwater” is set to drop February 15th on JimmyJazz.com for a retail price of $170.
For an athletic look, complement the Air Griffey Max 1 “Freshwater” with subtle, sportswear styles from Nike. Start with the Nike Sportswear Club Fleece Hoodie in black. This comfortable, cotton-blend sweatshirt features pops of bright-white Nike branding, which match the sneaker effortlessly. Pair the hoodie with the Nike Sportswear Club Fleece Joggers, also in black. The colorblocked sneakers will add some shine to this tonal look.
For the second outfit, begin with the Nike Icon Futura Tee. This stylish T-shirt comes in black-and-white, which mimics the sneaker in an understated fashion. Complete the look with a pair of Nike Sportswear Club Fleece shorts in black. The shorts match the shirt – the shirt matches the sneakers – what more could you want?
