When it comes to Air Jordans, certain color schemes are considered classic. If Mike played in the colorway? Duh. If it was a part of the sneaker’s original lineup? Of course. But, are those the only determining factors?

Following the frenzied release of the Air Jordan 1 “Shattered Backboard” in 2015, sneakerheads were confronted with the question head on. Despite its newness, the ultrahyped sneaker (as well as its subsequent “Shattered Backboard” iterations) was deemed by most to be a modern-classic entry, thanks in large part to its unique “Starfish”-orange hue.

Recently, Jordan Brand unveiled a new “Starfish” colorway of the Air Jordan 13, and later this month, the fan-favorite Air Jordan 4 is set to receive a similar treatment.

Though its nickname suggests otherwise, the upcoming Air Jordan 4 “Starfish” takes its inspiration from the technical composition of spacesuits. Thus, the upper is draped in a fine, metallic-black mesh, which lays atop an underlying layer of titular “Starfish” mesh. This contrast creates a chameleonesque effect, with the sneaker’s appearance varying depending on the angle and lighting in which it’s viewed.

The futuristic upper is accented by black TPU side-panel wings and heel tabs, which feature light-grey Jumpman insignias. Eyelets are also done in light grey, while black mesh netting makes its way onto the side-panel windows, as well as the bottom of the tongues. The top part of the tongues features a raw edge with exposed foam and “Starfish”-tinged Jumpman branding.

Moving down the sneaker, you’ll find black-and-“Sail” foam midsoles with visible Air units in the heels. The sneaker is anchored by light-grey rubber outsoles with contrasting “Starfish” accents on the toes and heels.

The women’s-exclusive Air Jordan 4 “Starfish” is set to release January 22nd on JimmyJazz.com for a retail price of $200.
