When compared to the iconic fleet of Air Jordan models, the Air Jordan 9 is considered somewhat of a dark horse. Prior to its release in 1993, the Tinker Hatfield–designed basketball sneaker appeared to possess all the markings of a certified-classic silhouette – there was just one problem. Michael Jordan didn’t play basketball in 1993.
At the height of his powers, His Airness traded in his Chicago Bulls jersey for that of the Birmingham Barons, the Chicago White Sox’s minor-league baseball team. The unprecedented decision left Jordan Brand reeling to find a new way to market the sneaker; after all, if Mike wasn’t wearing it, who would?
Luckily for the brand, Jordan’s colleagues carried the torch while MJ took his swing at America’s pastime. During the 1993–1994 season, Orlando Magic hoopers Penny Hardaway, Nick Anderson, and Mitch Richmond all debuted player-exclusive (PE) versions of the Air Jordan 9. The sneaker is widely regarded as the impetus of the ensuing PE boom, and is set to rerelease in a new form later this year.
Though the name suggests otherwise, the upcoming Air Jordan 9 “University Blue” takes inspiration from the 1993 Orlando Magic PE pair. Like the original, the upper is dressed in stark-white leather, with speckled, black synthetic paneling running from the mudguards to the heels. Heel panels are brandished with “University Blue,” rubberized Jumpman patches, and similarly colored “23” embroidery.
Moving toward the sole, you’ll find black polyurethane midsoles which creep up the side panels and onto the mudguards. The sneaker is completed by white rubber outsoles, which are home to “University Blue” Jumpman logos on the lateral sides. They are also embellished with unique globe graphics and inspirational phrases in various languages.
The Air Jordan 9 “University Blue” is set to release December 5th on JimmyJazz.com in full-family sizing.
The Air Jordan 9 “University Blue” is an understated sneaker with sparse pops of color. Accent the “University Blue” details with the Jordan 23 Engineered Tee in “Laser Blue.” This vibrant blue long-sleeve tee contrasts the black and white details of the sneaker while highlighting the “University Blue” accents. Complete the look with the Air Jordan sweatpants in black. These cozy cotton sweats feature bold Air Jordan lettering down the right leg, which perfectly matches the sneaker’s upper.
For the second outfit, start with the Jordan 23 Engineered Pullover Hoodie in “Laser Blue.” This comfortable sweatshirt uses a combination of materials to craft a modern look. The light-blue composition pairs well with the sneaker’s “University Blue” branding. Finish the outfit with the Jordan Jumpman Air Fleece Pants in grey. These stylish sweats feature a tapered ankle to help accentuate the sneaker’s unique shape. The grey hue serves as a bridge between the black-and-white and “University Blue” details of the Air Jordan 9.
